Who is the Duwamish Solidarity Group (DSG)?
The Duwamish Solidarity Group is an all-volunteer group that partners with the Duwamish Tribe to coordinate Real Rent Duwamish and assist the Tribe in ways that they request. We prioritize authentic relationships with each other and the Tribe, along with a deep understanding of indigenous and Duwamish context, both past and present. In this way, we can best support Real Rent, the Tribe’s federal acknowledgement efforts, community education and other projects as requested.
How can I join the Duwamish Solidarity Group?
Volunteering with DSG offers a way to learn more about solidarity organizing, take tangible action toward community education and social justice change, and meet some amazing people. It requires an ongoing commitment to be part of at least one DSG workgroup (which involves one evening or weekend meeting every other week, as well as occasional work outside of those meetings), and attendance at Seasonal Gatherings as possible. We are especially interested in those with experience/interest in social media, graphic design, communications, data management and event planning, but we know you have skills and expertise that DSG could use!
Joining requires being a Real Renter (no matter how small your "rent") and completing a series of four 2-hour onboarding sessions, with some homework between sessions. We offer these 1 or 2 times a year, generally on four contiguous Monday evenings. The onboarding is designed to support our organizing through shared language, expectations about working together, and knowledge about the Tribe's history and current context. These four sessions are also how we build trust with each other, so we can engage in this work in a way that consistently honors the long history of the Duwamish Tribe and supports our members to stay in solidarity over time.
We let Real Renters know when these onboarding sessions are offered through email and the monthly Real Rent newsletter, so keep an eye out!
