Frequently Asked Questions
Who Are We?
The Duwamish Solidarity Group (DSG) is part of the Coalition of Anti-Racist Whites (CARW), a coalition “of white people in the Seattle area working to undo institutional racism and white privilege through education and organizing in white communities and active support of anti-racist, people-of-color-led organizations." DSG first met in 2009 as a space for folks working towards racial justice while partnering with the Duwamish Tribe (Dkhw’Duw’Absh). We work to support and develop authentic relationships with each other and with the Duwamish People in ways they determine best achieve justice and community.

How is this project funded? Where does the money go?
The funds raised by Real Rent Duwamish go directly to the Tribe. The Duwamish Solidarity Group that started the Real Rent effort gets no share of Real Rent or any other donations made via the Real Rent website. DSG is all volunteer, with no office or phone, etc., so has no overhead. Expenses related to the launch of the Real Rent Duwamish endeavor were covered by group members' personal funds, plus a contribution from CARW. These expenses included the website name and ISP costs, and a monthly flat fee for Network for Good, a tool buried in the website that securely handles all Real Rent transactions.
Network for Good transmits funds directly to Duwamish Tribal Services (DTS), and sends a thank you and tax receipts to donors, minimizing administrative work for the Tribe and the Real Renter. As is common practice for any online transaction, a small fee is charged by Network For Good for each transaction. Real Renters have the option to pay that fee themselves or have it deducted from the rent payment. So far, a good share of Real Renters pay the transaction fee. Beyond that, the initial pool of DSG money has been used to buy printed materials and boost the social media posts. DSG is committed to funding these expenses for three years minimum to provide time to build a good base of support.
What if myself or my company would like to become Real Renters, but are unable to donate via Network for Good with a debit or credit card?
No worries! Please call the Duwamish Longhouse (206-431-1582) directly to make the donation to Duwamish Tribal Services. You may either snail mail them the donation at Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center, 4705 W Marginal Way SW, Seattle, WA 98106 or drop it off in person via the same address.
