A Resource Guide for Seattle Settlers Awareness about the true origins of Thanksgiving is increasing among non-Native folks. But once we dismantle the traditional Thanksgiving myth, what’s left to celebrate? How can we take part in the holiday while honoring its history and respecting our Native neighbors?
Real Rent Duwamish offers this placemat as a starting point. It is specifically geared towards Seattle-area “settlers” (people who do not have ancestral ties to this area). We hope that these resources spark ideas for concrete actions you can take — not only on Thanksgiving, but throughout the year. We give credit to the anti-racist national network SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) for inspiring us with their placemats in previous years. Check out their current holiday resources here.
Building a world that’s more just for everyone is going to take all of us.
